Buffalo
Bill Art Show Opens
Cody, Wyo. – A month-long exhibit of
paintings and sculpture by the finest contemporary artists
in the West opens next week at the Buffalo Bill Historical
Center.
The Buffalo Bill Art Show will unveil the
latest works by 100 artists from 16 states and Australia during
a public reception at the Historical Center 5 p.m. Tuesday,
Aug. 24. The exhibit remains open in the Draper Photography
Gallery through Sept. 24.
The 23rd annual Buffalo Bill Art Show &
Sale presents juried works of contemporary Western art including
oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, sculpture, ceramic, and
mixed media.
Participating artists include Cyrus Afsary,
Gerald Balciar, John Fawcett, T.J. Feeley, Mel Fillerup, Ann
Hanson, Harry Jackson, Steven Lang, Laurie J. Lee, Ralph Oberg,
Carol Peek, M.C. Poulsen, Kevin Red Star, Sherry Salari Sander,

Wilson Hurley of Albuquerque, the art show’s
2004 Honored Artist, has entered a recent oil painting, “Winter
Cottonwoods at Sunset.” Best known for his magnificent
landscapes of the American West, Hurley has been compared
to Western masters such as Thomas Moran and hailed as America’s
greatest living landscape painter.
The Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale culminates
the night of Friday, Sept. 24 with a live auction. Artists
participate in a Quick Draw on Saturday morning. Leading up
to the sale, the art show features special exhibits, studio
tours and artist demonstrations Sept. 22-25 as part of Cody’s
annual arts celebration, the Rendezvous Royale.
The Rendezvous Royale also features the Western
Design Conference – an exhibit of cutting-edge creations
by 100 leading Western furnishing and fashion designers –
and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center’s black-tie gala,
the Patrons Ball.
The 2003 Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale
raised more than $724,000 and attracted 800 guests. The sale
benefits the Buffalo Bill Historical Center – a complex
of five museums including the Whitney Gallery of Western Art
– and the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce.
