Wyoming Artists Compete for Scholarships

Cody, Wyo. – Aspiring artists from across Wyoming, ages 18-30, are invited to compete for scholarships and the opportunity to receive national exposure by displaying and selling their artwork during one of the nation’s leading western art shows.

The two winners of the fifth annual Gilly Fales Fine Art Award will each receive a $500 scholarship, participate in the 2005 Buffalo Art Show & Sale, and have their work seen by hundreds of serious art collectors in the art show catalog and during the month-long exhibition this fall at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.

Applications for the Gilly Fales Fine Art Award are open to Wyoming residents ages 18-30 who are majoring in art-related programs in college or taking part in other art-related ventures. An anonymous jury will award a $500 scholarship to one winner in two-dimensional art and one winner in three-dimensional art. The program accepts a broad range of traditional or contemporary western art themes.

Award winners will be invited to exhibit their work during the Buffalo Bill Art Show, Aug. 25-Sept. 23. They’ll also receive invitations to the dinner, auction and other major events the weekend of Sept. 23-24, and may choose to sell their award-winning piece.

The Gilly Fales Memorial Foundation for the Arts created the scholarship to empower young adults with a passion for the arts. Gilly Fales was an actress, singer, director and designer from Cody who embraced every opportunity to create. In honor of her life and spirit, the foundation seeks to encourage and celebrate the young adults who will become Wyoming’s next generation of artists.

Applicants are asked to submit a short application form and a photo or slide of their artwork. The application deadline is May 15. For an application or more information, call art show director Deb Stafford, (307) 587-5002, email info@buffalobillartshow.com, or visit www.buffalobillartshow.com and click on “Fales Art Scholarship.” A downloadable application form is available online.
