Show Announces Fales Award Winners
Cody, Wyo.—The Buffalo Bill Art Show
& Sale has announced the recipients of the 2005 Gilly
Fales Fine Arts Award. They are Michelle M. Harris of Green
River and Ashley Johnston of Powell.
Each will receive a $500 scholarship and their
work will be displayed in the 2005 Buffalo Bill Art Show,
opening Aug. 25 at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. They
are both invited to attend the show and sale, and their art
will be pictured in promotional materials distributed to arts
patrons nationwide.
Harris impressed jurors with her 14 x 28 inch
mixed-media piece titled Self Portrait. Johnston’s award-winner
was a 17 x 7 x 4 clay sculpture titled Forever. They join
seven other recipients in the history of the statewide arts
competition dating to 2001.
The Gilly Fales Fine Art Award honors the
artistic spirit of Gilly Fales—a young actress, singer,
director, and designer from Cody. The Fales family created
the scholarship as a tribute to Gilly and to motivate Wyoming’s
next generation of artists.
For the first time ever, a previous award
recipient, Blake Neubert of Powell, will formally participate
in the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale. And 2002 recipient
Tawni Schuler of Powell has been included in the September
issue of Southwest Art magazine in a section featuring 21
up-and-coming artists under the age of 31.
“If Gilly had lived to pursue her dreams,
we hope she would have been able to receive encouragement
and hope from awards such as this,” the Fales family
has stated. “It is an honor to Gilly’s life and
passion that her name and spirit live on in this award.”
